Your blood tests
If you have blood tests done by your doctor, I urge you to get copies of your own blood tests and look for results being skewed to one end of the normal range. Let me explain.
Where I currently reside, the normal range for TSH is 0.5 to 5.0. Those numbers may seem small but someone with a TSH of 0.5 will typically feel and look completely different to a person who has a TSH of 5. Also take into account that if your results happen to fall within the normal range you will usually be told by well-meaning professionals that there is no problem with your thyroid. I have often seen a TSH (made by the pituitary) blood result of 2.5 or greater in a person when their body was screaming out to the thyroid gland to make FT4. Normal FT4 levels sit somewhere between 10–20 and regularly I see someone experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism with an FT4 of 11. This person feels exhausted in their bones, has trouble naturally using their bowels daily, has dry skin, very low motivation, a tendency to a depressed mood, brain fog, and their clothes are gradually getting tighter. Their thyroid needs support.
In cases such as these, starting with iodine and selenium is always my first port of call, and sometimes iron too, is part of the first step. Additionally, working to support the adrenals, resolve estrogen dominance if it is present, switch to a grain-free diet, and getting real about your beliefs and your perception of what life is like for you can all work its magic on normalizing the thyroid.
Louise Hay, the brilliant metaphysical medicine pioneer, teaches that thyroid problems represent feelings and beliefs around humiliation and feeling like you never get to do what you want to do (how many mothers – in particular – does that describe?). Louise Hay suggests someone with thyroid problems unconsciously asks, ‘When is it going to be my turn?’ She suggests you develop a new thought pattern of ‘I move beyond old limitations and now allow myself to express freely and creatively.’ Underneath diagnosed hypothyroidism, Louise Hay suggests, are feelings of hopelessness, a feeling of being stifled, and a sense of giving up. She suggests you develop a new thought pattern of ‘I create a new life with new rules that totally support me.’
I include this so as to provide you with a complete picture of your thyroid health: from conventional function of glands and hormones, why you need to be aware not to rely solely on your blood tests, what the thyroid needs nutritionally through to the metaphysical. Somewhere among these three approaches lies your answer, not necessarily in one or the other. I urge you to explore all three.
